What are you investigating?

I am a structural biologist and our lab investigates how proteins work by studying their structures at the atomic level. In my case, I am studying a group of related proteins, one of which is important for T cell development. My research combines structural biology techniques with cellular and in vivo studies to dissect the function of these proteins. I want to use structural biology to get a better understanding of fundamental T cell biology, as well as to gain insights into how to target and regulate these proteins and signalling pathways for therapeutic benefit.

How did you end up at VIB?

I am from Ireland, where I completed my PhD in molecular cell biology in Dublin. After my PhD, I knew I wanted a change of scenery and a new research focus, which coincided at the time with attending an inspiring seminar by my current supervisor. Although I had no experience with structural biology, I was intrigued by the work of the lab and by the VIB as a research institute so I decided to take a chance and apply for a postdoc position…and here I am almost 5 years later! Taking on a new research challenge in a new environment has been hugely rewarding and has opened doors for new opportunities that I could never have expected – all in all, it was a great decision!

What is your favorite thing about VIB?

I love the collaborative and collegial atmosphere at VIB – no experiment is too ambitious! It’s easy to tap into the extensive knowledge across all VIB centres and the core facilities and cutting-edge technologies available at the VIB are second to none. There is also ample opportunity to connect with colleagues outside the lab, be it at networking events, training sessions, conferences or at our annual Postdoc Day.

What keeps you busy outside the lab?

In my free time I love to bake. I have a big sweet tooth so any excuse to experiment with new cupcake recipes makes me happy and allows me to de-stress – and makes me very popular with my colleagues when they get to test the results!
